History of the School
Loreto Girls Secondary School Aweil is located 10 km from Aweil town. The school will start with a transition year class in the beginning of the new school year 2026. The 40 girls will for the first year study in Rumbek, until all the facilities in Aweil are ready. Year after year, a new class will be added until it is a fully operational two-stream secondary school with classes from Senior One to Senior Four, as well as a Transition Year class.
Loreto schools around the world are inspired by the vision of Mary Ward who believed that “women in time to come will do much”. In choosing to open a school in Aweil the sisters continue to support the dream of Mary Ward in a situation where girls would otherwise have limited opportunities for education.
Loreto Girls Secondary School is part of the Catholic Diocese of Wau. The school brings together girls from different clans and tribes within South Sudan and provides an environment where the girls learn to live and study together.
